The Professional Toolkit is very compact

You might be aware of a vast array of tools and techniques available in the fields of general management, HR and learning but the most important tools will always be those that help to accurately diagnose the organisational problem in the first place. Anyone with a reasonable amount of intelligence and common sense will recognise immediately that problems can only be solved if you know what's causing them (cause and effect analysis) but that if you have limited time to spare then choosing the right problems first can be an issue (Pareto analysis).  Only then can you offer a solution and all HR and learning solutions need to have a very clear line of sight to employee performance (the Performance Curve) and to be addressed as part of a planned, iterative cycle of improvement (PDCA).

Diagnosis before Prescription

So often in HR and learning off-the-shelf solutions are available without any attempt at diagnosis.  There is a belief that appraisal, performance review, 360 feedback, management competence frameworks and the like have immediate validity without any reference to a specific context or tailored for the individuals concerned.  The truly Consummate Professional will never offer any prescriptions or solutions before being confident that they have undertaken a thorough, diagnostic analysis first. It is probably the key indicator that marks the true Professional out from the charlatan.
